At what age should someone seek orthodontic treatment?
Many people visualize a teenager in braces when they think about orthodontic care, but any age is the right age to get that perfect smile. Children typically have their first visit to the orthodontist’s office between the ages of 7 and 9, but around 20% of orthodontic patients are over the age of 21.
How long do you have to wear braces?
The amount of time braces need to be worn varies from patient to patient, but on avearage you can expect treatment to last about 2 years.
Am I going to be in a lot of pain if I get braces?
For the most part, braces do not cause a lot of pain with the exception of some minor discomfort you may experience for the first couple of days after getting your braces. We provide you with the tools and education to help minimize or eliminate any temporary discomfort you may experience.
Is it hard to keep your teeth clean with braces?
Keeping your teeth and braces clean during treatment is not difficult, but it does require dillegence. You should brush your teeth at least 3 times a day, especially right after meals. Keeping your teeth and applicances brushed, as well as flossing at least once a day will help to ensure a healthy looking smile when your treatment is completed.
Can I still play sports if I’m wearing braces?
Yes, you can still play sports, but if it is a contact sport it is important that you wear a mouthguard to keep your teeth and braces protected from damage.
I play the flute/clarinet/saxophone/etc., will I still be able to play my instrument with braces?
It might take some getting used to, as well as some adjustments, but getting braces will not prevent you from playing an instrument.
Do I still have to visit my regular dentist for my 6-month checkups?
Absolutely! It is important that you continue to see your regular dentist during your orthodontic treatment, and most dentists recommend cleanings and checkups every 4 months if you have braces. Your dentist will help to make sure your teeth are staying clean, and will work with Dr. Sonneborn to make sure your treatment runs smoothly.
