Elastics (Rubber Bands)
Though they seem small, elastics are a vital part of orthodontic treatment. Be sure to follow the instructions about their use given to you by Dr. Sonneborn and his staff.
Headgear is used to treat overbites and underbites. In many cases the use of headgear is no longer needed due to the use of a Herbst Appliance®.
The Herbst Appliance® is another way to treat an overbite, and is typically used on younger children who are still growing. It works by gradually encouraging outward growth of the lower jaw over time.
The palatal expander is used to expand your upper jaw in order to make room for the repositioning of teeth.
Positioners are used to make the final movements and positioning of your teeth. This is one of the final phases of treatment.
Retainers are used to make sure your teeth hold their new position, and that they do not revert back to the way there were. It is very important that you wear your retainer as directed by Dr. Sonneborn and his staff.
Separators or Spacers
Separators are thicker pieces of rubber that are used to create space in between your teeth to make room for the placement of orthodontic appliances.
